LYLE'S GRIEF Consequences of slavery FIRST EDITION Book 1 eBook ANTHONY PERRY Reviews
There initial premise was interesting.
However, the author failed in it's execution.
His inability to capture the emotional experience of Missy Lyle, his main character, makes his book almost unreadable; Lyle comes across as an omniscient piece of walking, talking exposition.
The reader never gets to feel what Missy experiences. Instead we are given stilted statements, rife with technical errors, such as
"Her minds next psychological trick did something quite remarkable, its resident alchemist prescribed a high definition movie clip."
"After all said and done, these baby shoes had already established there meaning; every time his feet kicked-out inside her womb, the blows reminded Lyle of his strength."
"She felt contempt waiting for the silly Boy Scout suspicious humiliation as well as the melodramatic fact finding routine from the police."
"I have a sharp pointed anger bordering on rage, but I am committed to managing that from harms way, whenever it rears its ugly head.”
Lyle's race is a flat portrayal of Blackness in the UK, devoid of any cultural nuance. Her feminity feels almost misogynistic; it reads as the faulty affact of a sociopath trying to pass. This is a writer who cannot realistically write someone of the opposite sex.
Lyle's deadpan response to her son's death is wholly unbelievable. Further, she seems to magically know it was suicide and not an accidental overdose, with no justification given to us as the readers.
Between the flat characters and the grammatical errors, I couldn't bring myself to read past the first three chapters.
Looking at the 1-star- review all I can say... What did you read? Certainly not Lyle's Grief.... But.. oh well...you cannot please everybody, right?
To my humble opinion the Lyle's Grief as well as the original novel "Shoelaces" are outstanding. It requires a very thorough background and a deep understanding of what addiction is, what it does to the addict and their familiy and to their minds. You must have seen the inside of a prison, you must have talked to inmates to describe it this way. And when it comes to Missy, she might seem "cold" but you cannot look into a persons feelings, especially someone who is so professional...living in a mans world...not allowed to show weakness, so I am fine with this. And my feeling is... you must have had your share of pain in life to write like this, so authentically, you must have lived through a lot of similar emotions yourself to describe them this way. I enjoyed reading the book and the ebook, I love the way the different sceneries are described, the empathy of the author for the protagonists, I couldn't let go once I started reading and I'm looking forward to read more from this exceptional author. Well done Mr. Perry!
